HONANIETH: PHASE 1

Honanieth (translating from Cornish as “identity”) is a continuous project investigating what it means to be Cornish to young people; specifically how it is sculpted, interacted with, and maintained. We are doing this by working alongside Golowan to monitor how young festival goers relate to the celebrations and what it represents, both historically and spiritually.

The first stage manifested as a workshop hosted at Trelya in which we had interesting conversations with young teenagers, made a map of our local place and placed what the young people would like to see at the festival, and making lightbox collages using images provided by both the participants as well as the Golowan archive. These are found at our online exhibition.

During the Mazey Day celebrations, our Directors (Kit, Ella, and Tiz) interviewed young people to continue our efforts to make Mazey Day feel more accessible, and in co-ownership, of the young people who participate as passive observers and festival goers during the midsummer celebrations. Over the day, we spoke to over 120 people to try to piece together the enjoyments, and criticisms, young people had toward the festival. Our results were published on our Instagram

LOLLYPOP

February-April 2023

IMG_9042.jpg

LOLLYPOP was an aspirational youth creative coaching programme, delivered at The Newlyn Exchange Gallery in Penzance, funded by Penzance Council. Local young people (aged 13-18) had the unique opportunity to collaborate and network with local artists during a series of mixed media workshops (see our Collaborators). They worked alongside our own 18+ creative youth practitioners. The aim of the project was to inspire young people to realise that they can work in the creative industries and potentially do this in Cornwall, learning directly from those that do so.

Parent Review

"Just wanted to say thank you so much to Become You CIC for all the hard work and your super energy, and the great workshops/sessions you created for 'Teen Creatives'.

My son really enjoyed it, seemed relaxed, full of enjoyment and positivity about all the sessions. We only recently look him out of school, and after having such a difficult time it was wonderful to see him so happy. We are so pleased he was able to access this, it has done wonders to his confidence, as well as being so inspiring."

Creative After School Drop-In

May-July 2023

The Creative After School Drop Ins were held at The Newlyn Exchange Gallery in The Engine Room. Every Wednesday during school term from 3-5pm. This was a space that young people had the choice to bring any creative work, or to just chill after school. Sessions were run by our brilliant Youth Creative Practitioners. Most sessions had a driven motive, we had collaborations from other CICs come and join in, and we had sessions run by our YCP Tiz and Ella.

What did we get up to?

Second week we had Tiz run a music workshop, which entailed sampling different sounds around the room, putting into logic pro, and creating a quick 18 second song, which you can find on our Instagram.

Week four we had Make It Better CIC join us to create wonderful cyanotypes. A day of bashing in the sunshine and experimenting with different natural objects.

On week six, we had Ella run a photography session. We focused on how to blur photos with shutter speed, and played with light and created a narrative.

Performance and Film Workshop

12th April 2023

This workshop was hosted at the Big Dance Company in Penzance. The workshop was facilitated by our very own Creative Youth Practitioner (CYP) Kit and his colleague Clayton Travis, who are both graduates from the Applied Theatre and Community Drama course from the Liverpool Institute of Performing Arts. We had talk administered by Denzil Monk, producer and founder of Bosena Films, and Martin Venning, Sound engineer and operations director for Golowan festival. The aim of this workshop was to show young people that there is a career in film and performance around Cornwall.

What did we get up to?

We did exercises that encourage collaboration and play in order to use acting and performance as a tool for personal expression and growth. The workshop was an introduction to exploring what acting is through play and basic character known as “archetypes”. The second part of the workshop, led by Clayton, focused on breaking down and analysing scripts. We then hosted Martin and Denzil as speakers who detailed insights into their respective industries, explaining what their job titles entail and how they got to where they are now.
